Galen Rupp Sets American Indoor 5000-Meter Record in Boston

January 17, 2014 by NYRR staff

Galen Rupp lined up at Boston University on Thursday, January 16, with one goal: setting a new American indoor 5000-meter record. A quick glance at the early press accounts shows how convincingly he accomplished his mission.

Words like “shattered” and “obliterated” pretty much tell the tale, as Rupp dashed into first place with a mile remaining en route to finishing in 13:01.26, besting Lopez Lomong’s previous mark of 13:07.00, set in New York at the Millrose Games last year.

As OregonLive.com reports, Rupp—a member of the Nike Oregon Project who’s in Beantown this month for a series of high-profile races—ran the final 200 meters in 30.36, outlasting former college rival Sam Chelanga to win the race.

If the day belonged to Rupp, Chelanga and third-place finisher Cam Levins also had reason to celebrate. The former notched a new personal best, lopping more than five seconds off his previous fastest time of 13:09.67 with an impressive 13:04.35, while Levins—a teammate of Rupp’s at the Nike Oregon Project—set a new Canadian record, smashing Jason Bunston’s old mark of 13:25.87 with a time of 13:19.16.

Rupp wasn’t the only runner gunning for a record at BU, and while his fellow Nike Oregon Project athletes Mary Cain and Treniere Moser came up short in their bids to topple Jen Toomey’s American indoor record of 2:34.19 for 1000 meters, Cain did set a new junior indoor world record, taking first place with a time of 2:39.25, LetsRun.com reports.

Moser followed close behind, taking second in a time of 2:39.32.
