Connolly and Centro Bookend a Colorful Wanamaker History

Last year, New York Road Runners sponsored the men’s NYRR Wanamaker Mile for the first time. Matthew Centrowitz took charge to win his professional debut at the distance in 3:53.92.

On Saturday night, Centrowitz will return to the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory for the 106th Millrose Games, not only to defend his NYRR Wanamaker Mile title but also to chase Bernard Lagat’s meet record of 3:52.87.

Cabral Comes to NYRR Wanamaker on a Mile High

Donn Cabral was a track star at Connecticut’s Glastonbury High School, about two hours northeast of New York City. After that, he was a track star at New Jersey’s Princeton University, about an hour southwest. Never all that far from the Millrose Games, but never quite close enough, either.

Boston-London Wheelchair Challenge to Launch in April

As if competing in two world-class wheelchair marathons just six days apart isn’t challenge enough, organizers of the Virgin London Marathon and the Boston Marathon have made it official.

Beginning this spring, the Boston-London Wheelchair Challenge will offer an additional $35,000 in prize money to the elite wheelchair athletes who compete in both the April 15 Boston race and the April 21 event in London. The new challenge was announced last week.

Delilah DiCrescenzo Now Hitting the Right Notes

Eleven years ago, “Plain White T’s” lead singer Tom Higgenson met Columbia University steeplechaser Delilah DiCrescenzo and declared that he was going to write a song about her.

He did. “Hey There Delilah” reached the top of the Billboard charts and was nominated for two Grammy awards in 2008.

Empire State Building Run-Up Powered by the MMRF Goes to the Aussies

Australians dominated tonight’s 36th-annual Empire State Building Run-Up Powered by the MMRF, claiming the top two spots in both the men’s and women’s elite races.

Winning the Men’s Invitational Race was Australia’s Mark Bourne, 29, in 10:12, while compatriot Suzy Walsham, 39, took the Women’s Invitational Race in 12:05, making her the #2 woman all-time behind only course record-holder Andrea Mayr (11:23, 2006).
