Five National Records Set in NYC Half

There were some impressive personal bests—including five national records—recorded by the deep field of professional athletes in Sunday’s NYC Half 2013.

All of the national records were set on the women’s side, led by runner-up Diane Nukuri-Johnson’s time of 1:09:12, which bettered her own Burundi mark of 1:10:55 set at last year’s NYC Half, by a whopping 1:43.

Following her, in third place, was Lisa Stublic, whose 1:09:18 improved on her previous mark for Croatia of 1:10:31. Born in Waterbury, CT, Stublic competed for Columbia University.

Finishing fifth was Ukraine’s Lyudmila Kovalenko, who set a personal best of almost four minutes with her time of 1:09:43 in what appears to be only the second half-marathon run by the 23-year-old. Coming in right behind her was Yolanda Caballero of Colombia, in 1:10:30 to break not only the national mark but also the South American record. Jane Vongvorachoti, who lives in Woodside, NY, broke the Thailand national record when she finished 25th in 1:17:41.

Improving her personal best by almost a minute and a half was Stephanie Rothstein-Bruce of Flagstaff, AZ. She ran 1:10:53, finishing ninth.

Nukuri-Johnson, Stublic, Caballero, and Rothstein-Bruce are all slated to compete in the Boston Marathon on April 15.

Among the key personal bests set by the men were those of runner-up Daniele Meucci of Italy, who smashed his previous personal best of 1:02:30 when he crossed the finish line in 1:01:06; Juan Luis Barrios of Mexico (1:01:21); Steven Sambu of Kenya, whose time of 1:01:34 was more than a minute and a half faster than his previous best; Jason Hartmann of Boulder, CO, whose 1:01:52 sliced 1:15 off the best time he had recorded coming into the race; and Rob Watson of Canada, who finished in 1:03:22 to shave seven seconds off his best.

Hartmann and Watson are planning to run Boston next month.
