Black Girls Run: Determined to “Preserve the Sexy,” BGR’s NYC chapter often runs in Prospect Park and through the neighborhoods of Bedford-Stuyvesant and East New York.

Black Men Run: Called “very supportive and motivational” by member LeVar Kelly, BMR’s NYC chapter holds group runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays in Prospect Park.

Running with Purpose

Perhaps no other runner in this year’s Brooklyn Half will have as much incentive as William Francis Callahan IV. He’s dedicating the race to his father, who’s been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer.

“Unfortunately, my dad won’t have the energy to attend the race, but he knows I’m doing it for him,” says Callahan. His father, William Francis III, has undergone six rounds of chemotherapy treatments since November 2013.

Defying Cancer Through Running

Josephine DeCicco has strong ties to Brooklyn, where she was raised, and to Staten Island, where she now lives. Growing up in Brooklyn, she spent many weekends at Coney Island on the rides. Her favorite was the Cyclone.
