Tips for the Start: Don't Go out Too Fast!

October 19, 2013 by Coach Gail Kislevitz

So many questions, so little time! On our conferece call Thursday night about how to run the marathon, we received a lot of questions about the start and first mile. So here's a recap on how to run the first mile across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge as well as some other tips:

-The bridge is an uphill so don't  expend a lot of energy in that first mile.

-The start will be crowded - it doesn't  pay to jockey for position in your first few miles as the race gets a bit more spread out after about mile 5.

-The course is more hilly than most people think (all those entry ramps to the five bridges are inclines) so you want to factor this in to your pace strategy as well - especially the Queensboro Bridge at mile 15-16.

-Mile 23 on Fifth Avenue is a slight incline so dig deep and look for the TFK cheering zone at 90th Street, right at the entrace to Central Park. We'll give you the motivavtion to finsih strong.

-Finishing strong is a great feeling...and being mindful of your pace and a bit conservative at the outset will help. My favorite marathon wasn't my best finish time but I enjoyed it the most because I had conserved energy during the race & was able to speed up in the last couple of miles to the cheers of the crowd--a real thrill!

...Remember, the best goal is the goal of finishing!
