Own The Day

October 28, 2013 by Coach Gail Kislevitz

It was a gorgeous day for the pre-marathon Poland Spring 5M in Central Park on Sunday. Our team, some decked out in Halloween costumes, gathered in Cherry Hill for pre-race stretches and words of wisdom and thanks from a Young Runner Ambassador.

Our runners were urged with extreme caution – and a few threats – to not race the run, but to enjoy it as a fun run and everyone seemed to comply. I’m sure many runners visualized running through that same finish line six days from now, underneath the iconic ING New York City Finish Line structure.

It seems amazing that the marathon is suddenly here!  After five months of training in extreme heat, rain, and all the other variables that go into marathon training, your day is near. Embrace it, love it, and own it. You deserve it.  It is a great achievement to run a marathon. It will open up a whole new world for you, one where the word, “Impossible,”  no longer exists.

When you understand the mind and soul of a marathoner, you’ll realize it’s not about the miles logged, the races won or lost. It’s passion that drives us. And if you have that passion, whether it’s to run around the block or run 26.2 miles, you will have the power to go the distance.

“Our races are to our sport what Wimbledon and the Australian, U.S., and French Opens are to tennis, and what the Masters, U.S., and British Opens and PGA Championship are to golf. Each race has the history, the tradition, the honor roll of legendary champions, and a special place in the eyes of all to make them stand apart from the other events.” Mary Wittenberg
