NYRR is making a real difference in the lives of children. We now reach more than 200,000 kids through our school-based Mighty Milers and Young Runners programs, propelling them to expand their physical, emotional, and educational potential through running.
The 2011 New York City Marathon had an unprecedented charitable impact, raising an impressive $34 million for 190 non-profits—much of which went to New York City-based organizations. NYRR’s own charity team, Team for Kids, raised more than $4 million that will fund community programs and initiatives to transform the health and daily lives of children who would otherwise have little or no access to regular physical activity. Despite the cancellation of the 2012 marathon, runners raised $31 million for more than 200 official charities.
Running the TCS New York City Marathon is a feat of willpower—and the race itself is a testament to the economic power of 2 million spectators, thousands of runners and their guests, plus sponsors, vendors, and NYRR. In 2010, the race generated a record $340 million for New York City, significantly boosting tourism, tax revenues, and the economy.
