Part-Time Weekend Field Support Engineer

The Filed Support Engineer role will be responsible for the deployment and support of LANs, Wireless Networks, WAN devices and Race Scoring infrastructure for all weekend events. The engineer will also serve as the main point of contact for all IT related issues for the duration of an event and contribute to the successful use of technology at New York Road Runners. Approximately two weekends a month.

  • Conduct wireless site surveys and deploy/manage LAN/Wireless infrastructure in an outdoors environment.
  • Work with different WAN/ISP providers to provide a reliable and secure internet connection to users.
  • Evaluate new wireless client devices to determine best wireless settings. Client devices include, but are not limited to laptops, desktops, tablets, and other proprietary wireless solutions.
  • Provide 1st level support for all users in the field and escalate issues to the appropriate teams as necessary to solve problems in timely manner.
  • Provides training for end users as needed.
  • Implement standards and procedures to quickly and efficiently provide problem determination and resolution.
  • Provide support for all weekend events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Thorough knowledge of Wireless Local Area Networks, authentication, security, and encryption protocols.
  • Solid understanding TCP/IP protocol, WAN, VOIP, firewalls, VLANS, ports, DNS and DHCP.
  • Proficiency in modern desktop/server Operating Systems.
  • Must be knowledgeable and current on Information Technology trends and best practices.
  • Proficiency in user account provisioning and maintenance.
  • Experience managing and configuring wireless APs, controllers and endpoints.
  • Knowledge of Cisco VPN software client support and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of standard security guidelines.
  • CCNA certification or equivalent qualifications/experience

Knowledge and abilities:

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service while representing the IT Dept. to the organization.
  • Advanced troubleshooting, analysis, critical thinking and problem solving skills while making difficult concepts easy to understand.
  • Must be extremely well organized with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills while supporting end users via phone, email, and/or in person.
  • Must be motivated, detailed-oriented and a team player with the ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work quickly and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience Required: 5+ years.
